How to Crochet a Simple Spring Tote (Beginner-Friendly!)
π How to Crochet a Simple Spring Tote (Beginner-Friendly!)
There’s something so satisfying about making your own bag — especially when it’s light, airy, and perfect for spring. Whether you’re heading to the market, the park, or just carrying your current WIP, this little tote is a fun and functional project.
Today I’m sharing a super simple, beginner-friendly pattern you can try — no fancy stitches, no complicated shaping. Just grab your favorite cotton yarn and let’s get started!
π§Ά What You’ll Need:
Yarn: Medium-weight (worsted or DK) cotton yarn
(I like using pastel or natural shades for that spring vibe πΈ)Hook: 4.5mm or 5mm
Scissors & Yarn Needle
Optional: Stitch markers
𧡠Stitches Used (US Terms):
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
SL ST – Slip Stitch
πͺ Pattern: Simple Spring Tote
Bottom of the Bag:
CH 31
SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each across (30 SC)
CH 1, turn. SC across
Repeat Row 3 for 12 rows (or however tall you want the base)
This creates a sturdy rectangular base. You can adjust the size by adding more chains or rows.
Body of the Bag:
CH 2, turn your work to crochet around the base rectangle.
Work 2 DC in each corner, and DC evenly along all sides to form a “frame” around the base. Join with SL ST.
CH 2, DC in each stitch around. Join with SL ST.
Repeat this round for 15–18 rows, depending on your desired height.
You can alternate rows of DC and CH 1 spaces to create a mesh look if you want it lighter and more “springy.”
Handles:
From your last round, CH 40 (or however long you want the handle). Skip 10 stitches, SL ST to join.
SC around the handle CH to thicken it.
Repeat on the other side.
Weave in all ends and block if needed.
π‘ Customize It!
Add a button and loop closure
Crochet a small flower appliquΓ© and sew it on
Use color-blocking (one color for the base, another for the body)
π§Ί Why I Love This Project
It’s quick, practical, and beginner-friendly — and you end up with something you can actually use. Plus, it makes a cute handmade gift idea!
If you try this pattern, I’d love to see how it turns out! Share your version on Instagram or in the comments π¬
And that’s the final post in the Spring Crochet Series πΌ I hope these gave you a little inspiration to kick off the season with fresh yarn energy.
